The Grace of Being There

This collection of essays written by eight single mothers explores each of our relationships with a Holy Saint who is herself a single mother.

The Grace of Being There: Single Mother Saints in Our Lives, published by Park End Books, is one of the first Orthodox books especially written for single parents, in hopes of offering inspiration, comfort and company. This audience is too rarely addressed in our Orthodox publications, so I hope this book is the first of many.

Holy Empress, Equal-to-The-Apostles Helena

St. Helena was a great solace to me through the experience of my own divorce. Though she is the namesake of my daughter and of my hometown, I didn’t know her well until I traveled to the Holy Land. As I entered into the most beautiful and profoundly powerful places I’ve ever been, each featured her icon, because she established it. She is the original pilgrim to Jerusalem, the one who established the path that I would follow — and she is the divorced mother of St. Constantine. I was honored and delighted to contribute my chapter on holy St. Helena, and her interactions in my life.
